Facilities - Inpatients
The hospital is designated by the NHS as being for intermediate care. This is short term care provided for patients leaving the acute hospitals (the Conquest and Eastbourne) where they will have spent approximately seven days. They can then choose to come to Rye for ongoing care and rehabilitation prior to going home. This will be organised through their Consultant , the Discharge team, or ward.
The average stay at Rye is around twenty one days. They may also come straight from home having been referred by their GP or District Nurse. At present we have 19 beds, of which 16 are for NHS and 3 for private patients. All patients have to be accepted by the Ward Matron or Senior Nurse on duty, having assessed suitability and whether their needs can be met. No beds are designated for respite or convalescence alone. All referrals are scrutinised regardless of condition. End of life cases will sometimes take priority if a bed is available.
Our experienced chef prepares all food in our new fully equipped kitchen, using local sources of vegetables, meat and fish, and providing tempting menus to suit all appetities.
Private patients may self refer or be referred by relatives or friends, and may be admitted for convalescence or respite alone. Medical history will be obtained from the patients GP, and a plan of care formulated before admission. Stays will normally be for two weeks, but may be extended up to a month. Patients will provide their own medicines, and any private services will be organised and paid for the patient.
The NHS now provide an experienced physiotherapist and occupational therapist for inpatients which is aiding recovery and confidence. This will often lead to earlier discharge. We have equipped a gym with some state of the art equipment for use at all stages of recovery, and there is a small kitchen for patients to relearn skills in looking after themselves.
